Ingredients
For the bottom layer
1/2cupbutter
1/4cupgranulated white sugar
1cupsall-purpose flour
1/4teaspooncinnamon
1/4teaspoonnutmeg
pinchsalt
For the apple filling
3tbspbutter
1/4cupbrown sugar
4-5large firm applespeeled and diced
1tspcinnamon
1/4teaspoonnutmeg
For the Crumb Topping
3/4cupoatslarge
1/2cupflour
1/3cupbrown sugar
1/4teaspooncinnamon
1/8teaspoonbaking soda
pinchsalt
1/3cup+ 1 tbsp cold butterdiced
Instructions
To prepare the bottom layer
Grease a 9x9 baking pan or preferably line with parchment paper.
Cream together the butter and sugar until well blended.
Sift together the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.
Blend into the butter mixture and press into the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake at 350 degrees f for about 12-15 minutes or until the bottom layer begins to brown at the edges. Cool on a wire rack for a few minutes.
To prepare the Apple Filling
In a large non stick skillet melt together butter and sugar until foamy. Add the diced apples and spices and saute for about 10 minutes over medium high heat until the apples are softened and excess liquid has boiled off. Cool for a few minutes and spread out on the prepared base.
To prepare the Crumb Topping
Mix together the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking soda and salt.
Using your hands, rub the butter through the dry ingredients until crumbly. Scatter the crumble over the apple filling and press down slightly.
Bake at 350 degrees f for about 25 minutes or until the crumble is golden brown. Cool completely on a wire rack before cutting and serving.
