Happy National Hot Dog Month! Lets celebrate with something a little different than plain old mustard…let’s kick up the heat instead!

Hot dogs are a summer grilling staple and a kid favourite all season long. That doesn’t mean that just kids get to enjoy them though.

I recently discovered Maple Leaf Lodge Spicy Ultimate Chicken Frankfurters while developing recipes for Wonder Ball Park Classic Hot Dog Buns. They have a bit of a spicy kick that I knew would benefit form a little dressing up. 

This version gets a bit of an adult flavour update with some bell pepper slaw and a little spicy sriracha sauce mixed into the ketchup. Don’t let your summer be filled with boring dogs. If you wan too give the mustard a rest and try on some new flavours, this is a very good point to start.

We served them on these Wonder Ball Park Classic Hot Dog Buns®  which are the perfect size to accommodate the ballpark sized Maple Leaf Lodge Frankfurters.

Ingredients
  • 4 Wonder™ Ball Park Classic Hot Dog Buns
  • 4 Maple Leaf Lodge Spicy Ultimate Chicken Frankfurters
  • For the Bell Pepper Slaw
  • 1 1/2 cups thinly sliced bell peppers
For the simple vinaigrette
  • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • pinch salt and pepper
For the Sriracha Ketchup
  • 1/3 cup plain ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Sriracha sauce
  • Pinch of pepper
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder (optional)
Instructions
  1. Whisk together the ingredients for the vinaigrette and toss with the bell peppers.
  2. Mix together the ingredients for the Sriracha Ketchup.
  3. Grill the Maple Leaf Lodge Spicy Ultimate Chicken Frankfurters until well heated and with good grill marks.
  4. Give the bell pepper slaw a final toss in the vinaigrette before serving on the Ballpark Classic Hot Dog buns along with the grilled frankfurters, topped with the Sriracha Ketchup.
