These old fashioned Chocolate Arrowroot Cookie Squares are an all-time favourite that has been made in my family for decades. Great for the freezer too.

Chocolate Arrowroot Cookie Squares

As a child, I first remember these simple and delicious no-bake Chocolate Arrowroot Cookie Squares as being made by Aunt Marion Morgan from Port-de-Grave, my mothers home town.
She was an “aunt” in the Newfoundland sense of the word. Here “aunt” and “uncle” were more commonly used as terms of respect for your elders than as a reference to a blood relative.
Though Aunt Marion had no children of her own, she welcomed the seemingly endless rabble of grandchildren visiting my grandparents a couple of doors up the lane. A boiling, black bottomed kettle on the kitchen wood stove meant cups of cocoa or sweet, milky tea were always on offer.
With steaming cups in hand and a warning to, “Blow on dat now, ’tis ‘ot,” we watched in anticipation as her ample frame, clad in her favourite lilac hued polyester dress and ever present apron, disappeared into the back pantry to retrieve a mystery treat for the tribe of little martles assembled around her kitchen.

A bottomless old biscuit tin held snowballs, date squares or chocolate chip cookies. However, sometimes she returned with a long rectangular Tupperware container full of Arrowroot Squares! Of course, much to the delight of her wide-eyed visitors.
Some 35+ years later, this recipe not only survives but thrives in my family circles. Especially at this time of year, a Christmas gathering will most likely find Aunt Marion’s Arrowroot squares making yet another welcome and memorable appearance.

Hi Barry, I'm a fan of your cookbooks & have 3. Noticed in this particular recipe there is no arrow root cookies listed in ingredients list. I think it must be an error so letting you know.

My Nova Scotia family makes these with a few differences that don’t alter the delicious outcome. I have made them occasionally and won first place in a chocolate competition with the recipe! No one in our area had ever had anything like them. In Massachusetts, I can’t find arrowroot cookies anymore (used to be in the baby food aisle), but recently found that Goya Maria Cookies are very much the same. I’ll be using those this Christmas.

Hi Barry These squares look delicious!! Can these squares be frozen or are they better made and then served?

They can be frozen but either add the cream on top when defrosted or use a non-dairy whipped topping that's able to be frozen.

Hi Barry, How wonderful of you to bring the past to life. We called our Aunts & Uncles what we were told to, & we didn't question why we should or how are they we were related? It was a given. I'm from Northern Ontario, and it's wonderful to read a fellow Canadian talk about this or that, because no matter where we are in this great country, food does bring us closer, no matter the distance. One of my son's is 37, and if I give him a box of arrowroot cookies - he's in cookie heaven. I will certainly make these bars for him, and his siblings come the holidays. Something else I would like to mention, is that whatever is in your recipes, we are sure to find it here in Canada. You are doing a wonderful job, and it shows that you care. I'm learning so much from you, and our neighbours south of us. Thank you.
