Quick stir fries are often on the table, served with steamed rice. In recent years though, the rice has increasingly been replaced by quick noodle dishes.

We use these often because they are easy to portion for the number of people being served.

We recently featured a Chinese Chicken Ball recipe which we serve with either Sweet and Sour sauce or a tangy Lemon Sauce. These particular noodles are a favourite to serve with those in particular.

Sesame Garlic Noodles, a kind of neutral side dish.

The toasted sesame oil is what brings the familiarity to this dish. It is one if those background flavours that you instantly recognize from so many Chinese takeout dishes in particular.

Toasted Sesame Oil

If you've never used it before, you'll soon recognise the fragrance from your last take out dinner! You'll also find out that a little goes a long way. A couple of teaspoons r just a drizzle can flavour a dish that serves several people, as it does here.

That familiarity in Chinese cuisine, makes it almost a neutral flavour to complement different sauces from sweet and sour to spicy. It kind of goes with everything yet complements, rather than overpowers.

Roasted cashew nuts.
Roasted cashew nuts are another ingredient I like to garnish some Asian dishes with, both for great flavour and added crunchy texture.

This side dish can complement almost anything you would normally use with plain rice, but with just a bit more personality.

With or without the cashews as a crunchy garnish, you'll find yourself serving this beside, or under, your favourite stir fried dishes too.

TOP TEN Asian Cooking Ingredients to keep on hand.

Hoisin Sauce is one of the best and most versatile Asian cooking ingredients to have on hand at all times. I use this brand which was recommended years ago by Bon Appetit magazine.

Many recipes here make use of some basic Asian cooking ingredients that I always keep in the fridge or cupboard.

My TOP TEN Asian cooking ingredients that I always try to have on hand are:

  1. Hoisin sauce
  2. Fish sauce

  4. Ginger root. ( I keep mine in the freezer and then easily grate it frozen)

  8. Oyster Sauce
  9. Sesame seeds
