Fried Chicken Wings with Blackstrap BBQ Sauce. Super crispy wings with a robust, sweet & tangy homemade BBQ dipping sauce. Perfect for parties & game day!
These fried chicken wings are probably the most requested dish that I have ever served when entertaining guests in my home. They have been a mainstay at many a celebration with friends over the years.
Some are not shy about requesting them in advance when an invitation is extended. We don’t like to disappoint. 😉
These are a particular favourite of our friend Barb. Whenever Barb gets invited over for the evening it automatically means , “time to make more wings!”.
You can get the recipe for our Blackstrap BBQ Sauce here. Many people are not fond of the intense flavour of blackstrap molasses so you can use fancy molasses for a milder flavour. The sauce will still be quite delicious.
Don’t worry about leftover sauce. It will last in the fridge for a week or more and can be used on grilled pork chops, chicken or even steaks. You’ll be sure to put it to good use for another delectable meal.

- 3 to 4 pounds chicken wings washed, trimmed and cut in pieces.
- canola oil for frying
- 2 eggs
- 1/3 cup milk
- 2 cups flour
- 2 teaspoons freshly grated nutmeg
- 1 tbsp ground ginger
- ½ tsp cayenne pepper optional, or more or less to your heat preference
- 2 tsp fine salt
- 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tbsp dry oregano
- 1 tbsp dry basil
-
Add canola oil or peanut oil to your deep fryer and preheat to 350 degrees F.
-
Dredge the chicken wings into the flour and spice mixture.
-
Dip each wing quickly in the egg wash and then back into the flour and spice mixture.
-
Repeat for all the wings. Lay them on a cutting board while the oil heats.
-
This double dipped method helps keep the crust on the wings and makes them super crispy too.
-
Fry for about 10-12 minutes minutes depending upon the size of the wings until a medium golden brown. Use a meat thermometer to determine of the inside temperature has reached 170 degrees F to ensure they are fully cooked. Small wings can cook in 8-10 minutes.
-
Drain on a wire rack placed on a cookie sheet.
-
Hold in a 175 degree oven if making more than one batch. Serve with Blackstrap Barbecue Dipping Sauce.
