Leftover Hot Beef Sandwiches with Worcestershire Garlic Butter Glaze

Sometimes I am reluctant to post ideas like this because I think they are just too simple. I consider them to be barely a recipe at all, especially when it comes to ideas like these Leftover Hot Beef Sandwiches with Worcestershire garlic butter glaze.

This is an idea that I have used in a couple of different ways over the years. Truth be told, on most occasions, I make a single one of these for myself when I am home alone.

The thinner the better for the leftover roast beef

I find sandwiches like these to be a perfect use of leftover sliced steak or roast beef, especially when serving just a few sandwiches. Just a few ounces of leftover beef and a hamburger bun can turn this into a quick meal for one or two people or more.

I am the biggest beef eater in the house and am often the only one to eat leftovers from a roast beef dinner or steak night. Spouse does enjoy a roast beef dinner or great grilled steak on occasion but almost never has the leftovers.

The same goes for our kids when they are at home.

Leftover Hot Beef Sandwiches. A leftover revelation.

Recently though, after a delicious prime rib dinner  the day before, I decided to make this sandwich again. Spouse was not working that day and sampled this sandwich for the first time.

Herb & Garlic Crusted Prime Rib Roast, with mashed potatoes, gravy, roasted carrots and Yorkshire pudding.

“Wow! That’s really delicious”, she said after the first bite. “Have you posted this on Rock Recipes?”

After replying no, she says, “Well you should, it’s a great use for leftover roast beef. I think people would appreciate the suggestion.”

I was surprised to get that reaction from someone who doesn’t normally eat leftover roast beef. So, I thought, “Maybe I am on to a winner here and don’t realize it.”

So, at Spouse’s suggestion here is this incredibly simple recipe idea. It can make a quick delicious lunch any time.

You can serve it with a side salad or some of our Low Fat Oven Wedges for a satisfying dinner as well.

After tasting these leftover hot beef sandwiches, you may well start buying larger roasts or grilling an extra steak. With leftovers this good, it’s a smart idea to plan a second quick and easy meal like this.

It’s a budget friendly way to stretch your meat dollar even further, too. With beef prices these days, you can never have enough tasty leftover ideas like this.

TIPS for Leftover Hot Beef Sandwiches.

  • If you have leftover Yorkshire Pudding Popovers from your roast beef dinner here’s another terrifically tasty idea. Try serving the prepared beef, along with the cheese, inside reheated popovers.
  • To reheat the popovers, I just preheat the oven to 325 degrees F and place the popovers directly onto the oven rack. They will reheat quickly in only about five minutes.
  • It is very important not to overcook the leftover sliced beef. You are merely tying to get the get heat through it. Less than a minute is often enough to do the trick. Since the beef slices are so thin, they are very easy to dry out and get tough. Nobody wants that!
  • If making only one or two sandwiches, I often give the meat an initial toss in the glaze and take the pan off the heat right away. I then continue to toss it in the glaze, letting the residual heat already in the pan finish the job.
  • Some tasty additions to this sandwich idea would be caramelized onions and/or sautéed mushrooms.
  • For an extra tasty addition, you can also try our incredibly flavourful Beer and Bacon Jam or Red Onion Jam.

Total Time: 15 minutes

Leftover Hot Beef Sandwiches. Thinly sliced leftover roast beef gets tossed in a garlic butter and Worcestershire glaze, then topped with cheddar and served on buttered grilled buns.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of leftover roast beef (thinly sliced) (Grilled steak is also good)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced.
  • 4 tbsp  Worcestershire sauce
  • salt and pepper to season (see note)
  • 4 slices of cheddar cheese. ( or any cheese you like. Blue cheese is a a great pairing too.)
  • 4 hamburger buns or Kaiser rolls
  • 4 tbsp butter ( for the rolls optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice the beef thinly and set aside to have at the ready to add to the pan.
  2. A also like to prepare the buns in advance to have those at the ready as well.
  3. Preheat a cast iron pan over medium high heat. Use about 1 tbsp of  butter for each bun, spreading it evenly over the surface of both halves.
  4. Place the buns, butter side down in  the preheated cast iron pan and cook until well browned and crispy. This step is optional, you can just toast the buns under the broiler if you like without adding additional butter.
  5. Melt the 2 tbsp butter in a small sauté pan over medium heat.
  6. Add the minced garlic and saute just a minute to soften but not brown the garlic.
  7. Add the 4 tbsp Worcestershire sauce and season with pepper.
  8. Cook for only an additional minute or so until the Worcestershire sauce reduces to a thin syrup consistency.
  9. Add the slice beaf and toss in the glaze for only a minute or so, just to reheat the meat. Taste a piece of the meat to see if extra salt is needed.
  10. Serve immediately on the grilled buns along with a slice of the cheddar cheese.

Notes

 Notes:

  • Worcestershire sauce already has salt, as does the butter. This may be ample salt for the beef. If using additional salt for seasoning, taste the beef at the end before adding more.)
  • Some tasty additions to this sandwich idea would be caramelized onions and/or sautéed mushrooms.
  • For an extra tasty addition, you can also try our incredibly flavourful Beer and Bacon Jam or Red Onion Jam.
