Whiskey Maple Barbecue Sauce. An incredibly flavourful grilling sauce that pays homage to two of Canada’s best exports; maple syrup and rye whiskey.
April has been a real mixed bag weather-wise here in Newfoundland. We’ve seen everything from cool sunny days to freezing rain storms.
With the snow melted (almost) and the back deck cleared, I am raring to go for BBQ and grilling season. I am dying to get the smoker out too.
Winter is never truly over around here until my smoker makes its seasonal start up.
BBQ smoking and grilling are my favourite pastimes during the warmer months of the year. Even here in the great white north!
I’ve travelled extensive in the Southern US and have had many great BBQ meals in several states. This winter we spent 3 weeks on yet another southern road trip.
We had great BBQ meals in New Orleans, Mobile, Savannah and even at our final destination Tampa. If you’re in that area, be sure to check out Al’s Finger Lickin’ Good Bar-B-Q in Ybor City.
It’s definitely one of the best southern BBQ joints I’ve ever tried…and I’ve tried a lot! Don’t forget to leave room for the pecan pie for dessert.
Whiskey Maple Barbecue Sauce, a Canadian twist.
As much as I love southern barbecue, I’ve had plenty of good BBQ meals here in Canada too. That got me thinking of a truly Canadian BBQ Sauce.
What better ingredients to start with than real Canadian maple syrup and rye whiskey. We have the best maple syrup anywhere and Crown Royal’s Northern Harvest Rye won the best whiskey in the world title back in 2016.
The sauce turned out beautifully tangy and sweet with just a little hit of the oaky, peppery whisky. It was utterly delicious on these grilled wings we tried them on first.
We also have tried this on grilled pork tenderloin which was also excellent. I can see it going equally well with beef; on either steaks or smoked brisket would be delicious!
Side dish inspiration too!
We have more side dish inspiration including everything from baked beans & corn bread to deliciously different potato and pasta salads. Be sure to check them all out in our collection of 26 Best BBQ Side Dishes too.

Whiskey Maple Barbecue Sauce
Whiskey Maple Barbecue Sauce. An incredibly flavourful grilling sauce that pays homage to two of Canada's best exports; maple syrup and rye whiskey.
Ingredients
- 5 cloves garlic
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 3 1/2 cups tomato puree
- 1/2 cup rye whiskey
- 1 cup maple syrup
- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp powdered ginger
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp onion powder
Instructions
In a medium sized saucepan, saute the garlic in the olive oil for just a minute to soften it.
Add all of the other ingredients and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring often.
I like to use an immersion blender to purree the sauce again at the end but this is not completely necessary.
Store and process properly in mason jars according to the manufacturers instructions.

It's New Years eve and was wondering if these can be done in the oven as the snow outside is not welcoming a BBQ being fired up. Perhaps on parchment or a rack and turned every 10 minutes. They will miss the smoke of the BBQ and markings but the sauce is very good. Just wondering?

I make a sauce similar to this, but tweaked it for even more flavor. I use Jack Daniel's Apple Whiskey. That added apple flavor is amazing. I have some Crown Royal Apple at home too, but have not tried it yet.
