Well, since we are in Halloween week, this recipe may not some as any surprise to many regular followers. It seems, I can't let an occasion go by these days without inventing yet another version of our now famous "Fart Cookies"!

It all started way back in December of 2017, at the height of Christmas baking season. I got a an email from a loyal Rock Recipes fan asking if I had a recipe for "Moose Farts"

The legendary Rosies origin!

Unfortunately, I had never made them but with a little memory jog, I remembered them from Rosie's Diner & Bakery in Gander. If you are ever in Gander, as all the locals know, Rosies is a MUST visit stop for a meal.

It's truly one of the best homestyle cooking restaurants in the province!

Rosie's also has a small bakery selection that greets you as you come inside the front doors, where homestyle bread, treats and cookies are available to take home. The most popular and famous of these is a no-bake cookie ball, a.k.a. Moose Farts.

With a little digging, and inquiries to friends in the Gander area, I tracked down a recipe that is pretty close to the Rosie's original.

Witches Farts, the latest in a cookie saga!

Since then, Moose Farts have become one of the most popular recipes on this website. They've been made by hundreds of thousands of people, and become a Holiday tradition in so many homes.

It's a terrific simple recipe to make with young kids especially. Many a multigenerational giggle has been between children, their parents and grandparents over the years as they participate in sharing the preparation of these easy treats.

Every year, I continue to get hundreds of messages telling me exactly that. It has prompted a whole line of "Fart Cookies" to share that family joy at different times of year!

I've since added Reindeer Farts, Caribou Farts, and Santa Farts for the Holiday season.

Unicorn Farts have made appearances at many kid birthday parties too. Even spring now has a celebration version with our latest Easter Bunny Farts with a chocolate egg at the centre!

Finally, we've added Witches Farts!

And with that we head toward celebrating Halloween with this new version, Witches Farts.

The flavour of this version is one I've had in mind for a while and inspired by my own childhood love of Trick or Treating.

Like many kids, my favourite treat to receive was always Reese's Peanut Butter Cups!

That flavour combo seemed to be a natural one to celebrate the spooky season, so that's exactly where I settled.

If peanuts are an issue, I've added a few alternate suggestions in the recipe notes. I've also given a few ideas for other ingredients to roll them in to enjoy at any time of year!

Happy Halloween!

Ingredients

  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk, 300 ml Canada, 14 oz US
  • ¼ cup butter
  • ½ cup peanut butter (crunchy or smooth) (See notes for alternatives)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 ½ cups mini chocolate chips
  • Halloween sprinkles for rolling. (See notes for other options))

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter and peanut butter together over low heat just until the butter has melted. Do not overheat the mixture, this will take only a couple of minutes.
  2. In a large bowl combine the peanut butter mixture with the sweetened condensed milk & vanilla extract until well blended.
  3. Add the graham crumbs and chocolate chips. Mix to combine well.
  4. Refrigerate for an hour or two before rolling the mixture into 1 ¼ inch balls. You want to make these on the smallish side as they are quite rich.
  5. Roll the balls in the Halloween and once again chill until firm.
  6. Refrigerate in a sealed container to store.

If a peanut allergy is an issue, any nut butter, like almond butter or cashew butter is easily substituted. I daresay Nutella would also work quite well. A higher oil content in some nut butters may require an additional ¼ cup or so of graham crumbs added to stiffen the mixture before rolling, if it seems too loose after chilling.

While this is a recipe written for Halloween, they really can be made at any other time of year by rolling them in additional graham crumbs, chocolate cookie crumbs, additional mini chocolate chips or chopped roasted peanuts. Another idea would be to dip the balls in melted hocolate like in our MICE COOKIES RECIPE.
