Date Coffee Cake with Chocolate Chip Streusel. A moist, delicious, date coffee cake made even better with the addition of a buttery crumb topping that includes sweet chocolate morsels.
I served this date coffee cake at a morning office coffee break to great reviews. Even those who said that they were not fond of dates liked this cake.
That’s probably because the dates are pureed and stirred into the batter. That gives it a sweet richness and adds to the moistness of the cake.
Served with some warm vanilla custard or Creme Anglaise, this would make a luscious dessert as well.
If serving it as a dessert I might just leave out the chocolate chips. Especially if you are serving it with custard.
The chocolate might just be a distraction from the flavours of date and custard which go so well together.

- 1/2 cup flour
- 3 tbsp soft butter
Instructions

To Prepare the Chocolate Chip Streusel
- Rub together all of the ingredients with your fingers until crumbly.
- Bake at 350 degrees F for 50 -60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean.
- Cool in the pan for about 15-20 minutes before releasing the cake from the pan.
- Cool on a wire rack or serve warm. Makes a great dessert when served warm with warm custard.

Excellent! To cut baking time I made this recipe as cupcakes, baked in greased/floured muffin tins. Baked for 20 minutes. Made 14 cupcakes that were delicious with a delicate crumb. Thanks for another keeper recipe!

OK, Barry....I have wanted to make this cake for ever and ever, but frankly thought the recipe and directions were a bit unconventional. This year, however, I had a surplus of dates after Ramadan and had to give it a try. INCREDIBLE........ Doesn't even begin to describe this concoction from heaven! I healthified it to my own taste...using whole wheat flour, a third of the brown sugar called for, 1/3 cup coconut oil, and a 1/3 cup applesauce (unsweetened). In the topping, I used 1TBS brown sugar and 1/4 cup chopped walnuts. The dates and chch are plenty sweet, naturally. This is really sublime! Thank you!!!
