Queen Anne Squares. A Newfoundland favourite!
Queen Anne Squares. Another popular cookie bar in Newfoundland, especially at the Holidays. It reminds me of a cookie bar version of the Mounds candy bar.

I've often received requests for this recipe from readers of the website but I had never actually made Queen Anne Squares. They are a local favourite in these parts and you can find them in many local bakeries.

I put out the call for a recipe on our Facebook page and got several responses with slight variations on what was the same basic recipe. I did modify it to make the moist cake base a little thicker to better support the delicious coconut filling and chocolate frosting top.

This may have been my first time making these but certainly won't be my last. Spouse says they remind her of a cookie version of one of her favourite candy bars, a coconut "Bounty" bar. In the states that would be the equivalent of a "Mounds" Bar or an "Almond Joy" without the almonds.
Hmmm... Now I'm thinking a couple of toasted almonds on top might be good. Maybe a new version could be in the works! Stay tuned!

Queen Anne Squares 2018 Update
When adding layers to any unbaked cookie bar recipe, spoon the filling all over the surface of the bottom layer before levelling. This ensures even distribution of the weight and helps get even layers throughout the baked cookies.

just wondering if you can freeze queenann squares and use the betty crocker chocolate icing
You can freeze them with the recipe provided. I can't vouch for Betty or her frosting .;)

What size can of condensed milk do you use? I'm from Newfoundland but live in Iceland and the products are different brands and sizes than what I'm used to at home. I just want to be sure I'm using the correct amounts before I make them! I've used many of your recipes over the years and this is my first attempt at Queen Anne squares. I sent my husband to work the other day with a tray of snowballs and shortbread cookies, both recipes from your site, and everyone in his office loved them.

Yes, that is a good question In the US cans are 14 oz but here they are 10 ounces (I think 300 ml)

Instead of icing,I melt chocolate chips,and a small amt. of canola oil,for the topping.

Kept on looking at the video of these squares and finally decided to make them today.They are decadent ,chewy and delicious! They turned out to be more delicious than I expected.Thanks for a terrific recipe.
These are wonderful but my middle layer (coconut) was sort of runny. Square shape didn’t hold up. Am I doing something wrong??
Not sure. You din't use regular canned milk by mistake did you? Never had that happen. Maybe bake an extra few minutes.
Can I make it in 8 x 8 sq pan, don't have 9 x 9
I made these a couple weeks ago and were a total fail. I don't know what I did wrong - followed the recipe, but the bottom layer and coconut layer seemed to meld into each other, and the coconut layer was mush.
So disappointed - would like to know if you have any thoughts on what Ii could have done wrong.

I have all your cookbooks and I love everyone of them. I grew up with some of these recipes (in Nova Scotia) and remember baking them with my mom. I have made these squares dozens of time. Everyone asks for the recipes and I refuse to give in out. I tell people to go to your website or buy your cookbook and get many many more recipes like this one. It works, everyone who’s asked for the recipe now follows Rock Recipes and own at least one of your cookbooks. I’m spreading the joy that you’ve given me with these recipes.
