Strawberry Pear Galette.  A quick & easy last dessert idea that’s made even easier with frozen puff pastry. Switch the combination of fruits and berries for any combination you like.

Strawberry Pear Galette

This Strawberry Pear Galette recipe is a great endorsement for keeping frozen puff pastry in your freezer at all times. Everyone knows I hate to waste food, and by waste I don’t mean that I eat it all rather than throw it out.

My friends and neighbours who receive our surplus can attest to that.

What I’m talking about is when we overbuy produce. For example, as in the case of the strawberries and pears in this galette tart.

Frozen strawberries for Strawberry Chiffon Squares

When out of season, don’t hesitate to use frozen strawberries in this recipe.

Both fruits were quickly getting over-ripe. It was unlikely they would be eaten in the couple of good days they had left in them.

Solution? Turn them into a very fast and simple dessert for dinner using frozen puff pastry already on hand.

The fruit was simply tossed together with a little sugar and Chinese Five Spice powder. That gives it an interesting spicy, fragrant touch.

Freshly picked green Bartlett pears on display at the farmer's market

We like Bartlett pears for this recipe but use your own favourite if you prefer.

Then, just  the fruit mixture is thrown onto some rolled out puff pastry. The pastry is folded rustically over the fruit to form the tart.

It really couldn’t be simpler. Just make sure you always have some great ice-cream on hand in the freezer along with that puff pastry.

The five spice in this recipe is easily substituted with cinnamon if you prefer. Or if you feel that it goes better with other combinations, like apple and blueberry for example.

Strawberry Pear Galette - Dessert was never simpler or easier than this gorgeous pear and strawberry galette using frozen puff pastry as a shortcut for this quick summery treat.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ½ tsp Chinese Five Spice powder, (or cinnamon)
  • 1 rounded tbsp corn starch
  • 1½ cups fresh strawberries cut in quarters
  • 3 large pears
  • 1 package of puff pastry, thawed, (See Note)

Egg wash (optional)

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 3 tbsp turbinado sugar, (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix the spice powder and corn starch through the ¼ cup sugar to distribute it evenly.
  2. Toss the sugar & spice mixture together it with the pears and strawberries
  3. Roll the pastry out t o about a 14 inch square and place the fruit mixture evenly in about a 10 inch square in the center.
  4. Fold the edges of the dough toward the center of the galette.
  5. Brush the edges of the pastry lightly with an egg wash made by whisking together the egg and water. You do not need to use all this egg wash, just enough to lightly coat the pastry edges.. Sprinkle the pastry edges with turbinado sugar if desired.
  6. Chill the galette in the freezer for about 20 minutes before popping it into a preheated 425 degree oven for 20 minutes
  7. After 20 minutes, turn the heat down to 350 degrees F and continue to bake until the crust is evenly golden brown.
  8. Let cool for 20 minutes before serving warm with ice cream.

Notes

Add another ½ hour to the prep time to chill the pastry.

The frozen puff pastry I use comes in 1 pound boxes and contains two 12x12 squares. I used only one for this recipe but I often make 2 at a time for bringing along to a summer barbecue or to serve a larger group.
