This burger is from the lost files of Rock Recipes!

Sometimes I take so many photos of different ways to use certain spice blends and dry rubs, that one gets lost in the mix.

The burger photo was taken back in 2017! I had just completed a recipe for Homemade Montreal Steak Spice, with far less sodium in it than commercial brands.

Homemade Montreal Steak Spice. Far less expensive and you control the salt level.

I had always like the flavour of the spice mix, but I do not like overly salty things. I made it mostly for myself, but it was an instant hit among all our readers who are controlling their sodium intake.

Try it for yourself. You need not add any salt at all if you choose. Just lightly season the meat you are using it on then season liberally with the sodium free spice mix.

The inspiration for this Montreal Smoked Meat Burger.

It was actually a restaurant visit that provided the inspiration for the burger. It was during travels in Quebec that I experienced a burger with a ground chuck patty and thinly sliced Montreal Smoked Meat on top.

The smoked meat sort of replaced the bacon I would normally add to burgers. It also featured provolone cheese, garlic mayo, and deli mustard.

It was incredibly delicious!

Caplansky's Old Fashioned Mustard  is a great choice for this burger.

I thought to myself, why not ramp up the flavour even more by adding more of that classic spice mix flavour to season the beef patty. That's just what I did and the result was spectacular.

Trust me, this is one if the most flavourful burgers you will ever try.

Montreal Smoked Meat at home.

I've recently started making Montreal Smoked Meat at home again. I'm considering adding some recipes for smoked meats and bacon.

I'm wondering if that's something that would be popular with readers.

  • 6 tablespoon garlic mayo (see notes)
  • 4 tablespoon deli mustard

  3. Grill about 2 minutes per side.
  4. Lightly toast the burger buns on the grill.
  5. Spread the deli mustard over the bottom half of the buns.
  6. Add the lettuce and tomato, then the grilled burger patties.
  7. Top the pattires with the provolone cheese while they are still hot. You can of course add them when the burgers are flipped ion the grill if you like)

  9. Spread the garlic mayo on the top toasted bum and add it to complete the burgers.

Notes

  • GET THE RECIPE FOR HOMEMADE MONTREAL STEAK SPICE HERE. I recommend using no salt at all in the Montreal Steak Spice. The smoked meat will add plenty of seasoning notes to the burger.
  • Pastrami is easily substituted for the Montreal Smoked meat if your deli doesnt carry it. Thinly sliced corned beef can also be substituted. Source low sodium versions of any of these if they are available or choose pastrami flavoured turkey breast now available in some delis.
  • Garlic Mayo is available in supermarkets but if you want to, just add 4 roasted and mashed garlic cloves to about a half cup of regular mayo to make a more flavourful version.
  • The nutrition here is for a double burger. You will cut calories by 400-500 by making single burgers which are still quite large because of the added deli meat component. You can cut the Montreal smoked meat amount in half as well if you like to further cut calories and sodium.
