Grilled Lemon Chicken. A super simple, easy marinade with few ingredients is all you need to add bright fresh flavour to the summertime grill. Delicious!
It’s no surprise to anyone who reads this blog regularly that I love my summer barbecues. There have been numerous recipes over the years, many featuring my now famous Smokin’ Summer Spice BBQ Seasoning.
There have also been many made with one of a growing collection of Homemade BBQ Sauces. With these sauces and the BBQ seasoning mix, there are endless possibilities for bringing juicy, succulent, chicken, pork, beef or lamb to the table.
Sometimes though I like to take a break from traditional BBQ recipes and stick with something simple. Our Lemon Rosemary Grilled Chicken or Grilled Pork Souvlaki are great examples of this approach.
Something simple and flavourful for the grill.
We have enjoyed many such meals already this summer already. But with yet another whole chicken defrosting in the fridge, I decided I needed some similar inspiration.
There is practically always a bag of lemons hanging around our kitchen. Often too many because of the “Costco curse”; that moment when you buy more of a thing than you should because of the low price.
Please don’t get Spouse started on black peppercorns! We have enough here to pass on to our yet unborn grandchildren!
But I digress. Lemon and chicken are a naturally delicious combination and I suddenly thought of my recipe for Broiled Lemon Chicken. We often serve that during the winter months.
Why hadn’t I thought of doing a similar recipe on the grill? The slight char from the grill plus a bit of a smoky touch added from grilling lemons was sure to be delicious.
Grilled Lemon Chicken, the result.
It did not disappoint. With a last minute squeeze of the grilled lemons over the chicken on the serving platter, it quickly disappeared in no time.
So much for that leftover chicken sandwich I had planned. Next time I’ll grill 2 chickens. I’ll bet those leftover chicken sandwiches will be excellent.

Grilled Lemon Chicken
Grilled Lemon Chicken. A super simple, easy marinade with few ingredients is all you need to add bright fresh flavour to the summertime grill. Delicious!
Ingredients
- 1 whole chicken cut in pieces, or about 3 lbs chicken pieces
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
- Juice of 2 large or 3 small lemons (Plus one lemon for grilling.)
- 1 tsp chopped fresh oregano or 1/2 tsp dried oregano (optional)
Instructions
- Wash your chicken pieces well and pat dry with paper towels.
- Add the chicken pieces to a large Ziploc bag.
- To the bag add the olive oil, salt, pepper, (optional oregano) and lemon juice.Toss together well, massaging the chicken pieces well with the lemon, oil and seasonings.
- Let the chicken marinate for up to an hour.Preheat your grill to low or medium low heat.
- Add the chicken pieces to the grill along with the extra lemon, cut in half with the cut side down.
- Use your judgement and grill the chicken pieces until fully cooked. It is important to turn the chicken several times during the grilling time. I turned the pieces about 4 times during the 35-40 minute cooking time.
- Cooking time will vary, depending on the size of the pieces.
- Use a meat thermometer to take a reading from the center of the largest pieces of chicken and when the internal temperature reaches 170 degrees F remove the pieces from the grill and let rest for 5 minutes.
- Just before serving, squeeze the grilled lemon halves over the cooked chicken.
Notes
Another great idea , instead of using the optional oregano is to sprinkle fresh chopped basil on the chicken before serving. Lemon and basil go very well together.
