Double Chocolate Cherry Crumble Muffins. Incredibly delicious chocolate & chocolate chip muffins with pops of sweet cherries and a vanilla shortbread crumble topping.
There is quite a collection of delicious muffins here on Rock Recipes and this latest one is now one of my new favourites.
Regular reader of Rock Recipes will know that cherry and chocolate is one of my favourite flavour combinations. IIt appears her in quite a number of recipes from Chocolate Cherry Upside Down Cake to Chocolate Cherry Cheesecake Trifle.
These are very chocolatey and moist with sweet cherry chunks and a great buttery shortbread crumble on top for added crunch.
The chocolate factor is really bumped up by the addition of chocolate chips to the muffin batter. The recipe as written calls for semisweet chocolate, which is generally what most people have on hand.
Even more chocolate-y
If you are a lover of deep dark chocolate like me, you can easily substitute dark chocolate chips. Substituting white chocolate chips would transform these into practically a whole new recipe.
I may just have to try that soon myself. The more I think of it , the more appealing that combination sounds.
The crumble topping could not be simpler. It is basically a shortbread recipe with a little vanilla extract added to bring texture and another layer of flavour to these muffins. I just love it.
I used fresh cherries in this recipe but I would not hesitate to use frozen if fresh is not available. Be aware that when using frozen cherries, the baking time may be a couple of minutes more. Just let the toothpick test be your guide.
They were a welcome mid-week treat but would be just as welcome at brunch this weekend. I’m sure everyone will love them.

Double Chocolate Cherry Crumble Muffins
Double Chocolate Cherry Crumble Muffins. Incredibly delicious chocolate & chocolate chip muffins with pops of sweet cherries and a vanilla shortbread crumble topping.
Ingredients
For the muffin batter
- 1 1/4 cups flour
- 1/3 cup cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 egg
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/8 cup melted butter, 1 ounce
- 1/8 cup vegetable oil, 1ounce
- 1/2 cup whipping cream
- 1 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar
- 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 3/4 cup cherries cut in halves or quarters
For the crumble topping
- 3/4 cup flour
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/3 cup butter
- 1/4 cup sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease 12 muffin tins well and dust with cocoa powder.
- Sift together the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder and set aside.
- In the bowl of a stand mixer with the whisk attachment in place, whisk together the egg, sugar and vanilla extract on high speed until foamy and slightly stiffened
- Mix together the melted butter and vegetable oil in a measuring cup with a spout. Slowly add the oil and butter mixture to the egg mixture in a slow stream as the mixer continues to whisk.
- Mix together the whipping cream and lemon juice and add slowly to the mixing bowl continuing to mix but at a reduced speed.
- Fold in the dry ingredients by hand with a rubber spatula being careful not to over mix. Don't worry about lumps in the batter, they are fine. When the dry ingredients are almost incorporated, gently fold in the chocolate chips and cherries.
- Spoon batter into well greased and cocoa dusted muffin tins. Top with the crumble topping.
To make the crumble topping
- Pulse together all the crumble ingredients in a food processor or just rub together with your hands until crumbly. Press together the shortbread mixture in your hand and then break off small pieces over the top of the muffin batter in the pan.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes at 350 degrees F or until a wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the muffins rest in the pan for 5 minutes before turning them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
